Colors and Contrast for Drama!
Do you like colors that are not typical for western decor? Use any color that you want and incorporate some of our ideas below to make it all work! Wall color, trim color, furniture color, upholstery color, and drapery color can make a room bold and exciting and provide an exciting background for accessories or they can create a calm, serene environment for total relaxation. Color choices can make a small room look more spacious or a large room look more cozy and inviting.
The Denim Blues!
What could be more western than denim and you can bring that comfortable look to your home with wonderful shades of blue, from pale blue to deep twilight blue. Silver is the perfect accessory for blue and you will find plenty of silver western accessories. You can even add a few conchos on drapery tiebacks and pillows as well as some silver studs placed sparingly on fabric decor. Blue and brown is also a very popular color combination especially when your walls are a pale or slate shade of blue.
A blue and brown color scheme offers an unlimited choices for bedding and furniture selection. Leather sofas, brown comforters with blue and throw pillows that include blue and brown in the design or denim comforters with some leather or brown suede pillows complete with silver conchos are only some of the many variations you can choose. A wonderful rug choice to bring in different shades of blue and brown or even add some other colors to the mix are high quality cloth braided rugs. These often overlooked choices of rugs really provide an anchor to your color scheme and go beautifully with any of the rustic decors, western, cabin or lodge!
Add a Little Green to Your Western Decor
Green is not the first color that is often thought of when planning to decorate with western decor, however; many people find shades of soft green very soothing and refreshing. Some of the pale greens, just as with pale pink and pale blue, are a nice contrast to bold chocolate browns so common in western decor. Brown leather, brown suede, dark brown wood are all materials that will look stunning with a wonderful refreshing shade of pale green, in either a warm tone or a cool tone - as long as it is a light shade of color.
If you are going to bring metal furniture or accessories into a room with a light shade of green, select darker grey, brown, or rust finished metal. An old fashioned iron bed is a wonderful selection for a pale green bedroom and in any of the finishes described or even an off white finish would look wonderful. A simple iron bed can result in a really high quality wester style bedroom.
Sunset Reds and Oranges in Western Decor
Borrow the colors of a sunset over the western plains for your western decorating. Not only is a red or orangey red a wonderful choice for western decor, but you can reflect a little bit of southwestern style into your decorating.
Gleaming gold is a wonderful metal accent for dark red and there are a number of conchos that have a gold or brass finish, they are not all shiny silver. Think about adding some of the traditional red camping lanterns. For a real treat, select a couple of these beauties in a shiny gold finish in either the electric light version or a real oil lamp version.
A shiny gold finished iron or brass bed sparklng against dark red walls is a magnificent sight! Cool the color a bit with expanses of cream color in padded furniture, drapes, bedding or area rugs.
The Boldest of the Bold - Black and White!
A black and white decorating palette conjures up images of ultra modern decor. But that is not necessarily the only decorating style that can look exquisite in these bold colors. Leather furniture is often available in black. Add in a hair on hide black and white rug and you're already well on your way to having a beautiful bold black and white western room.
You're probably not going to want to add in brown wood furniture into a black and white room. Where does that leave you for a selection of furniture? If you are decorating a bedroom you can go with a beautiful white iron bed in either a contemporary design or a traditional design. White or black distressed painted furniture is a great selection. If you need to make the furniture a little more western in style, replace the drawer pulls and knobs with a western design knob. either in silver or black or even select one of the antique style white porcelain or glass knobs.
